5. Drivetrain Oil & other Oils

One type of oil used in the drivetrain is gear oil.
Gear oil is used mainly for the following parts:
1. Transmission Gears
Transmission gears are not subjected to very strong forces, but because the engine is near, they experience some temperature fluctuation. These gears need a non-foaming oil that can maintain a constant viscosity.
2. Differential Gears
Differential gears are subject to strong forces and sideslipping, and therefore require oil with an
especially strong oil film.

Q:Can you substirute engine oil for gear oil?
A: You cannot in most cases.
However, it is possible to do so when the specifications of an engine oil type match the service requirements and conditions. Then, you must use the proper oil suggested in the workshop manual. Like engine oil, gear oil also has various classifications based on viscosity and service.

Precautions
Gear oil includes types for differential gears, transmission gears, and many others, so take care in choosing the correct type. Always select an oil suitable for the type of service.

Q: What orther types of oil are there?
A: Other types include grease and ATF (automatic transmission fluid).
Grease is a solid or semi-solid type of lubricant. It is used for bearings and many other parts. ATF is injected into the torque converter of automatic transmission vehicles where it plays the important role of transmitting power. Because ATF has different performance requirements than engine or gear oil, other types of oil cannot be substituted for it.

Right! So engine and other types of oil are each divided into classifications.
And the type of oil must be selected depending on the intended service.
Proper use of lubricating oils is vital to obtaining maximum performance
and extending the life of your vehicle.
