I. Product features
1. Regulatory compliance
(1) New Short-term Emission Regulations

The use of a new common-rail direct injection system and Mitsubishi Fuso’s own continuous- regenerative diesel particulate filter (DPF) realizes next-generation environment performance and enables CANTER models to comply with the 2003 (New Short-term) Emission Regulations.

(2) Ultra-low diesel PM emission certification

The new CANTER diesel models also earn certification under the more stringent Ultra-low Diesel Vehicle PM Emissions System introduced by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport for PM levels 75% or more lower than those required by the 2003 Emission Regulations.
(3) Other regulations & ordinances
The new CANTER diesel models also comply with the following regulations and ordinances:
  • 8-Tokenshi and LEV-6
  • Automobile NOx & PM Control Law
  • Mid-term Brake Safety Regulations
  • 2001 Noise Regulations

2. Next-generation environmental performance
(1) New Environment Engine

The new Mitsubishi Fuso Environment Engine(superscript: 3) uses high-pressure common-rail fuel injection and a high- precision electronically controlled cooled EGR system to realizes a significant decrease in PM. Other features include a positive crankcase ventilation system (PCV) that recirculates blow-by gas(superscript: 4) to the intake manifold and an on-board diagnostics system (OBD).

Measures taken to restrict increases in engine noise stemming from the use of high-pressure direct injection include the use of a more rigid crankcase, and reduction of gear, valve and combustion noise levels.

(superscript: 3) Uses low-sulfur diesel fuel (50ppm sulfur content).
(superscript: 4) Un-burnt fuel vapor that squeezes past the piston rings during a compression stroke.

with direct-injection and intercooler-
turbocharger

• High-pressure common-rail fuel injection system
The Environment Engine employs a common-rail high-pressure fuel injection system that optimizes fuel injection parameters for all engine loads and driving conditions. This technology significantly reduces NOx and PM levels by optimizing the in-cylinder air-fuel mixture to minimize incomplete combustion.

• 16-valve DOHC intercooler-turbocharged diesel engine
All new CANTER diesel models(superscript: 5) are powered by a high-performance 16-valve DOHC intercooler-turbocharged power unit. Achieving new ultra-clean levels of environmental performance, this high-output, low-consumption engine earns the new models Ultra-low diesel vehicle PM emissions certification.

(superscript: 5) The new Environment Engine is to be phased in on all models after the February launch of the series.

• Cooled EGR
The new exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system gains a water-cooled cooler and features more precise control of the EGR valve operation. The improved system recirculates optimum quantities of cooled exhaust gas, thereby lowering the combustion temperature and reducing NOx emissions.

• PCV blow-by gas recirculation
The new engine uses a positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system that recirculates blow-by gas to the intake duct. This environment-friendly feature prevents the release into the atmosphere of combustion gases that can leak from the engine.

• On-board diagnostics
An on-board diagnostics system monitors the operating status of the EGR system as well as any trouble in emissions reduction systems caused by wiring circuit malfunctions. A warning light alerts the driver in the event of trouble.

• New engine lineup
The 4.9-liter 4M50 intercooler-turbocharged engine now delivers significantly better motive performance with reduced emission levels.

CANTER engine lineup
Engine type Displacement (cc) Output kW(PS) Torque N•m (kgf•m)
4M50 (T3) * 4899 103 (140) 412 (42.0)
4M50 (T4) 118 (160) 470 (48.0)
4M50 (T5) 132 (180) 529 (54.0)
* Other engines to be phased in after February launch of 4M50 (T3) engine

(2) Continuous-regenerative DPF
Designed for use with low-sulfur fuels, the new continuous-regenerative diesel particulate filter comprises a powerful, high-capacity oxidizing catalyst and PM filter that efficiently break down and trap PM emissions.

The DPF works in conjunction with Mitsubishi Fuso’s new Environment Engine that significantly reduces in-cylinder particulate matter. A considerable proportion of engine-out PM emissions is initially broken down and purified by the powerful oxidizing catalyst that forms the first stage of the PM after-treatment system. This reduces the load on, and limits the build up of PM in, the filter downstream of the catalyst. Preventing clogging of the filter under low exhaust gas temperature conditions, this eliminates the need for forced PM oxidation that adversely impacts fuel economy.

The new DPF is now maintenance free after optimization of filter pore size prevents the accumulation of lubricating oil ash emitted from the engine thereby eliminating the need for periodic cleansing.

(3) Other competitiveness-enhancing features
• ABS now standard
CANTER diesel models are now fitted as standard with the anti-lock braking system that was previously offered as an option on SA and other trim levels. Certain models in the series use Power-ABS which features power-assist and electronically controlled apportioning of brake pressure between front and rear wheels.

• Uprated parking brake
CANTER diesel models now use an uprated parking brake that provides a greater safety margin. Maintenance of the parking brake has also been facilitated.

• Variable intermittent wiper standard on all models
All models in the series now come as standard with the variable intermittent wiper previously fitted only on higher trim level models.

• Change in seat color (DX trim level)
DX trim level feature a new-look interior with new seat colors.

• Fuel recirculation system standard on all models
All new CANTER models are fitted as standard with a fuel recirculation system that prevents clogging of the fuel filter at low temperatures. The system thermostat opens a valve at low temperatures to return some warmer fuel to the filter and thereby prevent clogging.
