Daimler/Nippon Foundation Innovative Leaders Fund
Finds First 8 Scholarship Students

Daimler AG (Stuttgart, Germany: Chairman Dr. Dieter Zetsche) and the Nippon Foundation (Tokyo, Japan: Chairman Mr. Yohei Sasagawa), today announced the first 8 “Innovative Scholarship” students under its overall “Daimler/Nippon Foundation Innovative Leaders Fund.” The 8 students were awarded at a key ceremony event held at Sendai campus of Graduate School of Management, GLOBIS University on Sunday, July 29.
Established in April 2012, the “Daimler/Nippon Foundation Innovative Leaders Fund” seeks to foster leaders who will drive change and reformation of the region hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake. In particular, it consists of the following two funds: 1. “Innovative Scholarship”:  Scholarship program for students residing either in Iwate, Miyagi, or Fukushima prefectures and studying at Sendai campus of Graduate School of Management, GLOBIS University; 2. “Startup Fund”: Fund for the start-up of new business in the Tohoku region.
Overall, the “Daimler/Nippon Foundation Innovative Leaders Fund” aims to create more than 100 business leaders in the disaster-hit areas through its scholarship program and provide support subsidies for 15-20 new remarkable businesses entrepreneurs. The fund will be granted during the period of three years from April 2012 to March 2015, with an estimated amount of about 200 million yen in total.
Within the 8 scholarship students who have been awarded to represent as leaders in driving reconstruction of the Tohoku region include already well-known leaders, Mr. Tomohiro Takei, Representative Director of MAKOTO General Incorporated Association, who has organized a fund to help entrepreneurs with capital and knowhow in the disaster-hit areas, and Mr. Kenji Suzuki, President of Yoake Ichiba, who has opened a “restoration restaurant area” in front of Iwaki station in Fukushima.
“Congratulations to our scholarship winners of the ‘Daimler/Nippon Foundation Innovative Leaders Fund,’” said Mr. Karl Deppen, Daimler Vice President and Head of Executive Management Development, offering a congratulatory remark during the awarding ceremony. “No doubt, the Tohoku region has invested tremendous resource in its recovery and reconstruction efforts. Now, 2012 is about reimagining a new future and investing into growth and opportunity, taking steps to invest in young entrepreneurs to bring back the strong spirit of Tohoku.”
The selected eight scholarship students will be granted approximately 50-80% of the tuition through the fund. Daimler/Nippon Foundation Innovative Leaders Fund plans to select students for the MBA degree course, who plan to enter GLOBIS Graduate School of Management after April 2013, and also candidates for the “Startup Fund” for new business entrepreneurs granted with the “Innovative Scholarship.”
