I. Product features
1. Regulatory compliance
(1) 2003 & 2004 (New Short-term) Emission Regulations

The marriage of the Mitsubishi eco-clean intercooler-turbocharged Environment Engine with Mitsubishi Fuso’s own continuous-regenerative diesel particulate filter (DPF) gives the new FIGHTER Ultra-low PM truck series next-generation environmental performance that complies with 2003 & 2004 (New Short-term) Emission Regulations and other requirements.

(2) Ultra-low PM emission diesel vehicle certification

The new FIGHTER also earns certification under the more stringent Ultra-low PM Emissions Diesel Vehicle system introduced by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport for PM levels 75% or below than those required by the 2003 & 2004 Emission Regulations.
(3) Other regulations & ordinances
The new FIGHTER series also complies with the following regulations and ordinances:
  • 8-Tokenshi
  • LEV-6
  • 1-3 Token Jichitai*4
  • Automobile NOx & PM Control Law

*4: The One Metropolitan & 3 Prefectural Authorities environmental ordinance (covering the city of Tokyo and prefectures of Chiba, Saitama and Kanagawa).

2. Next-generation environmental technology
(1) Intercooler-turbocharged New Environment Engine
6-cylinder models are powered by new 6M60(T) intercooler-turbocharged Environment Engines*5 that deliver clean, powerful and economical performance. For the FIGHTER Ultra-low PM series, Mitsubishi Fuso’s own MIQCS*6 combustion control and common rail injection systems are joined by cooled EGR*7, positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) and on-board diagnostics (OBD) to realize a very high level of environmental performance that comfortably complies with 2003 & 2004 (New Short-term) Emission Regulations.

*5: Use low-sulfur diesel fuel (50ppm sulfur content).
*6: Mitsubishi Innovative Quiescent Combustion System.
*7: Exhaust gas recirculation.

6M60 (T1) engine

• MIQCS (Mitsubishi Innovative Quiescent Combustion System)
For the first time, the 6M60 medium displacement engine adopts Mitsubishi’s proprietary MIQCS combustion control system that has already proven itself on the 6M70 large displacement engine range. MIQCS maximizes air and fuel mixing and combustion efficiency by injecting fuel under high pressure into large diameter combustion chambers. The increased combustion efficiency over conventional combustion systems, which rely on the air flow within the chamber, cuts in-cylinder NOx and PM emissions, and also improves fuel economy.

• High-pressure common-rail injection system
The Environment Engine employs a high-pressure common-rail injection system that optimizes fuel injection for all engine loads and driving conditions. Working in concert with the MIQCS combustion control system, this technology significantly reduces both in-cylinder PM and fuel consumption while also improving engine response.

• Cooled EGR
The new EGR system gains a water-cooled cooler and features more precise control of the EGR valve operation. The improved system optimizes the amount of cooled exhaust gas recirculated to the combustion chambers, thereby keeping down combustion temperatures to reduce NOx emissions and improve fuel economy.

• PCV*8 blow-by gas recirculation
The Environment Engine models uses a positive crankcase ventilation system that recirculates blow-by gas to the intake duct. This environment-friendly feature prevents the release into the atmosphere of unburnt combustion gases that can leak from the cylinders into other parts of the engine.

• On-board diagnostics
The new FIGHTER Ultra-low PM models employ an on-board diagnostics system that monitors the operating status of the EGR system as well as any trouble in emission reduction systems caused by wiring circuit malfunctions. A warning light alerts the driver in the event of trouble.

• Engine lineup
FIGHTER Ultra-low PM models are offered with a choice of two in-line 6-cylinder intercooler-turbocharged engines that deliver outstanding environmental performance and operating economy.

Type Displacement (cc) Max. output
[kW (PS)]
Max. torque
[N-m (kgf-m)]
6M60(T1) 7545 177 (240) 686 (70)
6M60(T2) 199 (270) 785 (80)

(2) Continuous-regenerative DPF

In addition to using the technologies outlines above to cut in-cylinder emission levels, Mitsubishi Fuso has developed its own continuous-regenerative diesel particulate filter exhaust after-treatment system. The overall result is outstandingly environment-friendly engine performance. Designed for use with low-sulfur fuels, the new continuous-regenerative diesel particulate filter employs a powerful, high-capacity oxidizing catalyst and a PM filter to efficiently break down and trap PM emissions.

In the first stage of PM after-treatment, a considerable proportion of the much reduced engine-out PM emissions from the intercooler-turbocharged 6M60(T) Environment Engine is broken down and purified by a powerful oxidizing catalyst. This significantly reduces the load on, and limits the build up of PM in the filter downstream of the catalyst. Preventing clogging of the filter under low exhaust gas temperature conditions, this eliminates the need for forced PM oxidation which adversely impacts fuel economy.

The new DPF is now maintenance-free after optimization of filter pore size has prevented the accumulation of lubricating oil ash emitted from the engine, thereby eliminating the need for periodic cleansing.

3. New mechanical automatic transmission: first in class
• Fully-automatic INOMAT-II brings improved operability + fuel economy
The FIGHTER Ultra-low PM 4-ton cargo model (240PS output) uses the latest version of Mitsubishi Fuso’s INOMAT*9 transmission. INOMAT-II marries the easy-drive qualities of a fully automatic transmission with the fuel economy of a manual gearbox.

*9: Intelligent & Innovative Mechanical Automatic Transmission

INOMAT-II shifter
• Easier operation
INOMAT-II employs advanced electronics to automate shifting with a manual transmission. The latest fuzzy logic control circuitry tailors shift scheduling to different vehicle operating conditions and for individual driving styles and preferences. Able to leave the selector lever in D both when moving off and while under way, the driver is relieved of the burden of operating the clutch and gearbox. And since he only has to use the accelerator, the driver can concentrate more on maneuvering his vehicle when moving off or reversing, making for safer and more pleasant vehicle operation. INOMAT-II is also ideal for drivers whose driving license limits them to operation of an automatic transmission vehicle.
No clutch
• Better fuel economy
The fully automatic INOMAT-II derives from a mechanical and not a torque converter-type transmission. The powertrain is tuned for maximum fuel economy, enabling drivers of all abilities, simply by selecting D-range, to return better fuel economy than the average driver using a manual gearbox.
INOMAT-II transmission
• Manual mode available
INOMAT-II also features a manual mode that enables the driver to shift up or down as he wishes to match particular driving conditions, such as staying in a low gear when climbing, or using engine braking when descending, a steep gradient.

4. Other competitiveness-enhancing features
• ABS standard specification
All models in the FIGHTER Ultra-low PM truck series are fitted as standard with anti-lock braking that enables the driver to retain directional control of his vehicle under emergency braking.

• Energy absorber for seat belt pretensioner
Seat belt pretensioners on FIGHTER Ultra-low PM trucks now use an energy absorber that mitigates the force transmitted to the wearer’s chest region in a crash by gradually slackening the seat belt while still providing the necessary level of restraining force.

• More air suspension models
Height-adjustable air suspension that cuts cargo bed vibration for improved levels of freight carriage quality as well as facilitating cargo handling is now offered on long body models.

• Chassis layout facilitates maintenance
For easier maintenance, the fuel filter has been relocated and fitted to the chassis frame.

• “Super Package” trim for more models
The classy Super Package factory-fitted exterior and interior trim option package developed for the DX model is now offered on a wider range of models.
