Mitsubishi Fuso Updates on Quality Issues

As our investigations are still ongoing, on June 8, 2004, we solely reported the details below regarding the 97 quality issues announced by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport the same day.

Further details will be disclosed by Mitsubishi Fuso President and CEO, Wilfried Porth, at a press conference on Tuesday, June 15, 2004.

  • There are 97 cases, known to us at this point on the basis of Product Quality Reports (PQR) from 1992 until March 2004. This figures includes the 4 cases we announced at a press conference on May 20, 2004.
The first case concerns the clutch housing and transmission case, a recall filed on May 26th.

The second case concerns a propeller shaft detachment due to the loosening of nuts on the heavy-duty truck Super-Great. The company implemented a recall in 2003 but later found out that the development of the countermeasures was not sufficient. Production number is around 8,000. As of May 20th, 12 Product Quality Reports (PQRs) were reported.

The third and fourth cases concern heavy-duty sightseeing busses. One case is also a propeller shaft problem, and the other case concerns the parking brake. Production numbers in these cases are 250 and 4,000 respectively. As of May 20th, there were 6 and 48 PQRs reported, respectively.

Mitsubishi Fuso will officially file a recall as soon as details and countermeasures are clear.

  • Some of the cases resulted in physical injuries. The exact number of injuries and further details will be disclosed at the press conference on June 15, since the final investigation is still ongoing.

  • The 97 cases include a number of hidden recalls, however the exact number is still under investigation.

  • These failures are classified into 5 categories, namely, A through E. However, reasons of classification, exact number of cases and contents in each category are still under investigation.

  • MFTBC is still investigating how many of these 97 cases are subject to recall; the final figure will be clearly below 97.

  • Also, MFTBC is still investigating why these cases were not included in the “2000 recall cover-up announcement”. This, too, will be announced at the press conference on June 15.

  • As MFTBC announced at the press conference on May 20, 2004, all above-mentioned points are the direct result of our ongoing series of internal-investigations into the past.
