Fuso Global Sales Increases 18% in 2012,
Strong Growth in Japan, Southeast Asia, the Middle East,
and Africa

Kawasaki - Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC), one of Asia’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturers, today announced its global sales (including international markets and Japan) increased 17.8% in 2012 to 173,971 units (Jan.-Dec. 2011: 147,653 units).Fuso’s sales in its home market of Japan significantly rose in 2012, up 29.7% to 34,970 units (Jan.-Dec. 2011: 26,959 units). In international markets outside Japan, Fuso sold 139,001 units, a 15.2% growth year-over-year (Jan.-Dec. 2011: 120,694 units). Numbers continue to prove overall great customer response to Fuso products and the company’s operational excellence under its 5-pillar growth strategy FUSO 2015, marking a third-year-in-a-row growth since 2009. In 2013, the company plans to further increase its product offensive, eyeing more than 40 market launches, 30% increase over 2012, including new segment entries and new product variants.
“Fuso’s performance in 2012 and our third consecutive growth years reflect our success and numerous important milestones achieved through the course of the year,” said Dr. Albert Kirchmann, MFTBC President & CEO and Head of Daimler Trucks Asia. “Moving ahead in 2013, we will further roll-out our offensive under our 5-pillar growth strategy ‘FUSO 2015.’”
Mr. Kai-Uwe Seidenfuss, MFTBC Senior Vice President of Sales & After Sales referred to the overall global market trend, “Clearly, 2012 has shown that Fuso operates in markets geared for further overall growth; despite some economic headwinds we expect our strength at home market and in major markets of Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and other regions to continue in 2013.”
With a focus on the home market of Japan, Mr. Akio Suehiro, Senior Vice President of Mitsubishi Fuso Sales Japan commented, “Our industry-leading fuel-efficient products are the core of our strength offering our customers greater value for money and lower Total Cost of Ownership.”
Strong Growth in Home Market of Japan, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa
Fuso’s sales in its home market of Japan developed positively, up 29.7% in 2012 to 34,970 units (Jan.-Dec. 2011: 26,959 units). Sales were supported by the continuing reconstruction demands from Tohoku, the northeastern part of Japan hit by the earthquake and tsunami in 2011. Customers’ response to Fuso’s eco-friendly and fuel-efficient product offerings were key factors in this positive sales development. Sales of the all-new Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid light-duty truck in Japan have reached approximately 400 units since its launch in May 2012.
In international markets outside the company’s home market of Japan, Fuso sold 139,001 units, a 15.2% growth year-over-year (Jan.-Dec. 2011: 120,694 units). Sales were supported by continuing growth in Southeast Asia, the company’s largest export region, in the Middle East and in Africa. In Southeast Asia, sales increased 12.6% to 74,646 units (Jan.-Dec. 2011: 66,321). Sales in Indonesia reached a third-year-in-a-row record 67,932 units, up 10.1% (Jan.-Dec. 2011: 61,682 units). Accumulated sales in Indonesia have reached more than 900,000 units. Sales in Taiwan were up 4.1% to 12,115 units (Jan.-Dec. 2011: 11,643 units). Malaysia sales reached 2,520 units, up 47.1% (Jan.-Dec. 2011: 1,713 units). Sales in Thailand were up 234.3% to 2,420 units (Jan.-Dec. 2011: 724 units). In the Middle East, sales increased 63.1% to 24,201 units (Jan.-Dec.2011: 14,840 units). Sales in U.A.E. increased significantly to 14,374 units (Jan.-Dec. 2011: 7,787 units), an 84.6% growth year-over-year. The African market also showed positive momentum, up 88.7% to 8,046 units (Jan.-Dec. 2011: 4,264 units).
Increasing Product Offensive in 2013, New Segments and New Product Variants
Fuso plans to increase its momentum in 2013 by a series of product offensive, including entry into new segments and introducing new product variants. Overall, the company plans approximately 40 market launches by the end of the year. A highlight will be the continuing launch of its all-new Canter Eco Hybrid light-duty truck in international markets, already launched in Europe in September 2012, and just arrived for the Australian market on February 7, 2013. Fuso is active in more than 130 markets worldwide.
