The Design Behind FUSO’s Hydrogen Vision

    日本語

Designing Emotion: How FUSO’s hydrogen trucks are shaping the future and shining bright at the Japan Mobility Show 2025.

In this second volume, we shift our focus from the engineering behind FUSO’s hydrogen prototype vehicles to the design that brings them to life. In today’s world, where trucks are increasingly similar in performance, price, and quality, one element remains that can truly set a brand apart: emotion.

It’s the pride a driver feels behind the wheel. The confidence a fleet manager has when choosing a vehicle. The loyalty that keeps customers coming back. And its design that brings these emotions to life.

At the Japan Mobility Show 2025, FUSO unveiled two hydrogen-powered concept trucks—the engine-powered heavy-duty truck (H2IC) and the liquid hydrogen fuel cell powered heavy-duty truck (H2FC). While their powertrains represent different paths to zero emissions, their design shares a common goal: to make innovation visible, memorable, and desirable.

Design as a Brand Multiplier

Design isn’t just about how a truck looks – it’s about how it’s perceived. It’s the first thing a fleet manager notices in the yard. It’s what makes a vehicle stand out on the road, turning every trip into a moving billboard. Done right, design builds trust, commands attention, and drives long-term loyalty.

For FUSO, design is a strategic tool. It supports marketing by making the story instantly visible. It enhances brand strength by creating a recognizable identity. And it motivates drivers by giving them a product they’re proud to operate.

“That creates a desire and brand perception that elevates FUSO to new heights. That is what we wanted.

BENJAMIN NAWKA | Head of Design, Mitsubishi Fuso

Both the H2IC and H2FC were designed to showcase FUSO’s commitment to sustainability and advanced technology. But each takes a different approach, reflecting the nature of its powertrain.

H2FC: A Glimpse Into the Future

The H2FC is a bold vision of what’s next. Its design is sleek, aerodynamic, and full of future-facing details. The centerpiece is the—a global industry first. This illuminated grille features dynamic lighting and an infinity effect, hinting at future functions like charge status, emergency signals, and welcome animations.

The truck’s surfaces are sculpted to express motion and efficiency. Closed side panels create a seamless silhouette while revealing illuminated hydrogen tanks. The rear bumper and brake lights echo the tech-forward look of the front, creating a unified impression from every angle.

Color plays a key role. The H2FC wears Fusion Green metallic paired with Obsidian Black, blended across the cab and trailer to emphasize flow. On the cab, this is achieved through color blocking to reduce visual weight, while on the trailer, the colors are smoothly blended. Accents in Isotope Lime appear in stitching, emblems, graphics, and seat belts – adding a vibrant contrast that signals clean energy and innovation.

Inside, the cabin uses sustainable materials like circular leather and eco-friendly textiles. The result is a space that feels both high-tech and comforting, designed to express endurance and safety. Advanced mirror cam systems are seamlessly integrated into the A-pillars and windshield, enhancing visibility while maintaining a clean design.

H2IC: Rugged, Refined, Ready

The H2IC concept takes a more grounded approach. It’s closer to a production-ready vehicle, with design cues that reflect durability and practicality. The iconic FUSO Belt remains in its original form but is enhanced with precise color lines that carry through the vehicle’s graphics, emphasizing stance and aerodynamic flow.

The TechTower, which houses the hydrogen tanks, is connected to the cab with a sculpted cover and features an illuminated side window that offers a glimpse of the technology inside. All panels are fully functional, designed to withstand the demands of real-world use.

The trucks aren’t just built to perform – they’re built to be seen, felt, and remembered.

Like the H2FC, the H2IC uses the Fusion Green and Obsidian Black color scheme, but with Ignition Red accents that highlight its internal combustion character. Matte black finishes reinforce the rugged feel, drawing a subtle connection to traditional diesel trucks.

The cabin mirrors the H2FC in its use of sustainable materials, creating a consistent brand experience. Mirror cam systems are exposed and industrial in appearance, emphasizing the truck’s mechanical strength. Even the refueling area is carefully designed, showing FUSO’s attention to every touchpoint a user might encounter.

Design That Connects Technology to People

Technology alone doesn’t sell trucks. Fleet managers want vehicles that are safe, efficient, and easy to operate. Drivers want something they’re proud to use. That’s where design comes in – translating innovation into human value.

FUSO’s design team sees their role as a bridge between engineering and emotion. While technology defines what a truck can do, design answers why it matters and how it feels. It ensures that every advancement is not just functional, but meaningful.

A Holistic Approach to Presence

From the grille to the graphics, from the cabin materials to the refueling interface, every element of the H2IC and H2FC has been considered. The trucks aren’t just built to perform – they’re built to be seen, felt, and remembered.

This is design that goes beyond aesthetics. It’s about creating vehicles that sell themselves on the road, that build loyalty through pride, and that turn innovation into identity.

As FUSO steps into the hydrogen era, it’s not just introducing new technology. It’s introducing a new way to connect with customers – through design that speaks to the heart as much as the mind.
