The Super Great was launched as the successor to “The Great.” It introduced several groundbreaking features for its time:
•Japan’s first discharge (HID) headlamps
•A low-floor 4-axle configuration with equally sized wheels
Additionally, it adopted the distinctive “Round Cubic Style” and a newly developed cab, establishing a design language that would continue to evolve for generations to come.
Further enhancements followed in 2000, including the introduction of full air-suspension models
•New 6M70 engine
•Improved braking performance
To comply with emissions regulations, the powertrain also underwent a major transition—from V8 engines to inline 6-cylinder turbocharged engines—marking a significant evolution of the lineup. By 2005, in response to new short-term emissions regulations, all models had been standardized to inline 6-cylinder turbo engines.
A major facelift in 2007 brought a completely redesigned front appearance. At the same time, advanced technologies were introduced, including:
•Urea SCR system
•2-pedal transmission “INOMAT-II”
These innovations contributed to the model receiving the 2007 Good Design Award, recognizing not only its performance but also its design excellence.
In 2010, the newly developed 6R10 engine was introduced, meeting post-New Long-Term emissions regulations.
In 2014, additional advancements included:
•Adoption of an asymmetric turbocharger
•Achieving +5% over fuel efficiency standards across all models
The exterior design also evolved, with blue and silver accents added to elements such as the grille, bumper, lamp bezels, and mirrors—reflecting a balance between functionality and design.
A major milestone came in 2017 with the first full model change in 21 years.
•New engines (10.7L 6R20 and 7.7L 6S10)
•New 12-speed AMT “ShiftPilot”
•Standard-equipped telematics system “Truckonnect”
Together, these advancements ushered in the era of connected trucks.
In 2019, the Super Great became the first commercial vehicle in Japan to feature Level 2 automated driving technology with Active Drive Assist. The 2021 update included the following features:
•Active Drive Assist 2
•Emergency Stop Assist
•Active Side Guard Assist
These enhancements significantly improved safety for both drivers and surrounding road users.
