Former Workhorses Shine Again in the Great Outdoors – What Makes Them So Special?

Lately, my social media feed has been infested with rugged, high-floor 4WD trucks transformed into overlander-style adventure rigs. It feels like the RV boom of the ’80s and ’90s is making a comeback. I decided to see this trend up close and personal by joining an enthusiasts’ event.

And I wasn’t going alone.

I arrived with ATHENA, Mitsubishi Fuso’s concept vehicle that debuted at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show as a rescue truck. I was deeply involved in its development and driving it to the event felt personal. The anticipation grew as I drove toward the campsite, eager to meet this motley group of truck owners.

It didn’t disappoint.

The campground was alive with a mashup of 4WD Canters—former fire trucks, old transporters, even dump trucks, all reborn as leisure companions. These vehicles, once defined by hard work, now serve as gateways to freedom and creativity.

Watanabe – The DIY Master

Watanabe is a legend of the community. He customizes everything himself from interiors to bodywork. His participation in the event is what initially drew me in. His pride and joy? A high-floor Canter in full overlander spec. Believe it or not, he owns four high-floor Canters, including a food truck! Sone – The Event Organizer

Sone drives a Canter that once served as a broadcast van. It’s a seventh-generation model (sold from 2002 to 2011 in Japan), but thanks to meticulous care, it gleams like new. The cargo area is spacious enough to stand and walk comfortably, perfect for a living space. And that’s not all. Sone also owns a Canter built for brutal winter terrain. Most Eye-Catching: The Former Fire Truck

At first glance, it looks like an active-duty fire truck. The siren and rotating lights are gone, but the water pump still works—and yes, it can spray water! Former fire trucks are popular among beginners because they’re well-maintained, have low mileage, and can often be purchased at government auctions.

Dump Truck Turned Race Machine

One madman converted a former Canter dump truck into a competitive off-road racer. Seeing a cab-over truck in trial competitions is rare, and this one ranks among the top finishers—a truly one-of-a-kind build.

Why High-Floor 4WD Canter?

The event was dominated by Canters. Why do owners love them so much? Here’s what I learned:

・Unmatched Cargo Capacity
A truck’s biggest advantage. With options like different wheelbases and double cabs, you can tailor the setup to your needs.

・Off-Road Capability and Durability
Muddy trails? Uneven terrain? No problem. Even in heavy rain, these trucks power through while hauling tons of gear.

・Bold, Rugged Looks
The sheer presence of a high floor 4WD truck is hard to beat. Seeing them lined up, side-by-side was breathtaking, like stepping into an adventure park.

The High-Floor 4WD Community and What’s Next

These gatherings happen regularly, and conversations flow easily:
“Bought this brand-new 20 years ago—still runs like a champ.”
“I’ve got a crazy mod in the works.”

In the end, the community is built on shared passion. Currently, Mitsubishi Fuso has suspended production of high-floor 4WD Canter models due to regulatory compliance, and the restart date remains undecided.

Many attendees, however, are hoping they make it back to the production line. In the meantime, keep an eye on used truck listings and auctions. You might just find your dream build.

My Thoughts

Every truck had a story, and every owner was wonderfully bold and creative. The limitless potential of the Canter truly excites me. Designing ATHENA six years ago was thrilling, and sharing that same excitement today made me genuinely happy. I’m grateful to this community and all the passionate owners who keep the spirit alive.
